Awanas at Pinewoods

Pinewoods AWANA "Moment for Missions"

Pinewoods Awana is mission-minded.  Nearly every week our children are introduced to a new people group from somewhere in this world.  We do this because:

  • We want our clubbers to see the world through God’s eyes and understand His heart for LOST children
  • We want our clubbers to care about other people – close by and far away.
  • We want our clubbers to be part of something greater than themselves.

Praying that God will make Pinewoods Awana clubbers into world changers!

Over the course of the Awana year our clubbers have learned the following Bible verses in large group time with the accompanying sign language motions.

Acts 1:8 – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”
Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Romans 6:23 - “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”
Romans 10:13 – “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”
The last four verses are frequently referred to as the “Romans Road” and is an effective tool for sharing the Gospel.  Your children are now equipped to share the good news of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world!

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Great Britain.  Violent crime, alcohol and drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, immorality, prostitution, illegitimacy and abortion rates, gambling addiction and personal debt levels are alarmingly high in Great Britain.  Without a radical change, disaster looms.  Our children were encouraged to pray for Great Britain this summer as they watch the Olympics.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Ethiopia.  Ethiopia is the oldest Christian state in the world, after Georgia and Armenia.   It is interesting to consider that Philip’s obedience to God in traveling down a dusty road may have been the first introduction of the Gospel to Ethiopia.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Sierra Leone.  Sierra Leone is in the continent of Africa and is known for its diamond industry, yet it is one of the poorest countries in the world.  We compared the average per capita income (most in Sierra Leone are surviving on less than $1 per day) and the average life span (age 47) of people from Sierra Leone to people in the United States.  In addition, the vast majority of people in Sierra Leone are Muslims.  The children got a sense of how truly blessed they are and how much the people of Sierra Leone need our prayers.  Perhaps one of these days one of our very own Pinewoods Awana clubbers will travel to Sierra Leone to minister God’s grace to the people of that country!

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Tanzania.  Tanzania is in the continent of Africa and is one of the poorest countries of the world.  Because of the relative peace in this country many people groups from surrounding countries have migrated to Tanzania making it a rich field to harvest souls for Christ.  In fact, there are 37 people groups totaling just fewer than 5 million people who are unreached for Christ.  An unreached people group is a group that has less than 2% Christians.  Pray that God will send His laborers out to the fields of Tanzania.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of South Africa.  Surprisingly, 96% of the people in South Africa claim to be Christians.  In fact, the Global Day of Prayer started in Cape Town and is now observed in every country in the world by hundreds of millions of Christians.  Please pray for those in leadership - that justice, wisdom, righteousness and economic betterment for all may be their priorities

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Chile.  Chile is predominately Christian, at least by name.  Our prayers focused on the reality of a Christ-centered life to be lived out among those who profess Christ as Savior and Lord.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Turkey (get it..Turkey the week before Thanksgiving).  Turkey has such a rich history of Christian heritage, yet we find it to be over 99% Muslim today.  Just because we come from a nation that claims to be “Christian” is no guarantee that we will continue in faithfulness to the true and living God.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.  Each box contained a personal note from your child, toiletries, toys, and candy.  In addition, a gospel message in the appropriate language for its destination will be placed in each box.  What a great way to start the Christmas season!

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the praying for our country and the world.  We focused our attention and prayed for the 2200 people groups who have yet to have the Bible translated into their language as well as the 54 countries where the Gospel is restricted and believers are persecuted.  Our children we reminded that only God has the power to open eyes and ears to receive the Good News that God loves us and sent his only Son Jesus to die on the cross so that all who place their faith and trust in Him will be saved.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of the Philippines.  The Republic of the Philippines comprises of 7,250 islands, of which over 700 are inhabited.    God is moving in the country as evidenced by the rapid growth of evangelical churches.  Dr. and Mrs. Hooker shared slides and personal stories from the several years that they spent in this country.  And one of our clubber’s dad, Matthew Schelling, is currently stationed in the Philippines.  Please pray that the government will actively purse justice and righteousness as they put an end to the corruption of leadership that has plagued the Philippines for the last 20 years.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Malaysia.  Over 60% of the 28 million people in Malaysia are of the Muslim faith and there are 183 people groups that speak 145 different languages.  In the midst of this sea of lost people exists 2 Awana clubs.  Your child was encouraged to pray that God would use the Awana clubs in Malaysia to reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ.  And that God would send missionaries to the unreached people groups who have yet to hear the good news that God loves them and sent Jesus Christ to die for their sins.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the reason we focus on missions!  There are still over 2.8 BILLION people in this world who have never heard the name of Jesus.  In Matthew 28, Christ commands his followers to, “go and make disciples of ALL nations…” and the apostle Paul, in Romans 10 asks us, “how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?”  With 2.8 billion people who have yet to hear about Jesus, we have our work cut out for us.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on the country of Haiti.  Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and voodoo has a major hold on the lives of many of the Haitians.  However, the spiritual response to the tragedy of the 2010 earthquake was an almost universal outpouring of prayer, repentance and calling upon God for mercy and deliverance. Out of the disaster, God appears to be doing something radical and new among the people of Haiti.  Our children were encouraged to pray for the physical and spiritual healing of the Haitians.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on Guanajuato, Mexico.  Guanajuato is located in the center of Mexico, northwest of Mexico City.  Its actual name means, “hills of frogs”.  This summer several men from Pinewoods joined others on a week long medical missions trip to Guanajuato.   On Wednesday our Awana children were able to see and hear about the spiritual and physical needs of people in this city.  They were encouraged to pray for the people of Guanajuato and to consider one day being a part of a missions’ team themselves.

Our Moment for Missions this week focused on Cantonment, FL.  We may not consider our hometown to be a mission’s field, but that’s where mission work begins... in our neighborhood, work place and school.  We have a great privilege here in the United States to worship God and to share the love of Christ openly and freely.  Our Awana children were encouraged to be active in telling their friends and classmates about what Christ means to them… and maybe even inviting a new friend to Awana next week!
